The Objective
Surrey County Council invested money into a project to change West Hill Special Educational Needs School from secondary to primary status.
The Solution
Mountjoy was responsible for the final third phase of classroom alterations and refurbishments. Through new structural openings, partitioning, decorating and flooring, a number of new facilities were created. The school hall was refreshed with a new access route, a new practical learning space, food technology room, group rooms and refurbished office areas have all developed the site for pupils. Externally a new football cage and sensory garden are now open to the school.
With the project taking place in an SEN school, our team arranged a meeting with the school’s leadership team to discuss any special requirements. It was found that the pupils did not like sudden change, so our team extended the site set up from one week to a fortnight and arranged for the site welfare units to be delivered in smaller batches. This allowed the pupils to slowly become familiar with our site compound on the school grounds.
Our Contract Manager, Richard Peterson, arranged a ‘Have a Go’ day for Year 11 pupils at the school. This allowed the pupils to visit the site, have a go at painting and gain an understanding of the building works which were taking place at the school. We also arranged a 'Bug Hotel' activity for pupils using waste materials from the site.
