The Objective
Mountjoy was appointed to create a new arts and heritage venue for local charity 'a space' arts in Grade I listed God's House Tower in Southampton.
The project was made possible with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, Southampton City Council, the Barker-Mill Family Foundation and other national foundations.
The Solution
The project to refurbish God's House Tower, a late 13th Century gatehouse in the old town of Southampton, took place over a year from September 2018 to 2019.
Our most experienced heritage conservation team planned the refurbishment works, from its minor demolition works to new installations and decoration works.
To transform the historic building, the refurbishment works included the removal of modern internal walls, rebuilding of a staircase and lift installation to grant access to the upper floors. A new kitchen and servery was created to provide a café for staff and visitors to the reanimated centre. Externally decking was laid to the tower which offers views over Southampton towards the harbour's cruise ships.
Any excavation works were very carefully carried out. An old structure was discovered between the inner and outer stone leaf of the building.
