Objective

Cliffdale Primary Academy, located in northern Portsmouth, is a special school for pupils aged 4 – 11 who have complex learning difficulties -- including many pupils with autism. Over the summer of 2019, Portsmouth City Council appointed Mountjoy to bring areas of the school up to standard and enlarge specific learning areas in readiness for the new school term.

Solution

Works generally comprised internal refurbishments to the existing:

  • Staff room & WCs
  • IT office
  • Server room
  • Laundry room
  • Food technology room
  • Group room
  • Sensory room
  • External store

This included minor demolition and adaption/alterations to these rooms to enlarge the spaces, some of which took place during term time when the school was ‘live’. Our Site Manager was liaising with the Caretaker on site on a daily basis to keep him notified of works being carried out - this allowed us to adjust our working practices according to the school’s requirements. An example of this involved planning our works around certain term-time dates in June/July when we could not carry out noisy/disruptive works.

We were asked to ensure that the project was completed by the end of August 2019 as a hard deadline, as the works needed to be ready before the new term in September 2019. To achieve this, we programmed our works effectively, maximising the number of trades working on site simultaneously to accelerate the programme.
