The Objective
The project to extend The Heights and Medina Leisure Centres was borne out of the Council’s Leisure Needs Analysis, which demonstrated that despite meeting the needs of the local community, the leisure centres were a binding constraint on the Council’s ability to increase the levels of physical activity, health and well-being of the Island.
The Solution
Mobilisation of the project began in December 2011 for a start on site in January 2012. The Heights Leisure Centre extension and alteration project was carried out in a phased approach to allow works to start at Medina Leisure Centre.
Phase 1 covered the refurbishment of the swimming pool which involved new mechanical and electrical services, all new tiling to the pool and its surround, a new poolside promenade, decorations, fixtures and fittings and a new roof deck. This phase also included refurbishments of the leisure centre’s changing rooms, reception area and hallways.
A large extension was built in order to improve the building’s flexibility; following the structural works new windows and doors were fitted along with suspended ceilings, partitions and flooring complete with all associated mechanical and electrical work, carpentry and decoration. The roof was constructed with an Alwitra covering furthering the building’s green credentials.
Phase 1 was handed over in October 2012. Phase 2 saw internal refurbishments and alterations to the building along with external groundworks to the facility. This phase took place between October and March 2013.
