Objective

The Island Learning Centre is based in Newport, Isle of Wight and is a specialist educational facility catering towards both primary and secondary pupils who have been permanently excluded from their last school or have Special Educational Needs. The relatively new school opened in 2015, and in 2019 it was decided that extensive refurbishment works would need to take place to further ensure the school was providing the right environment for its pupils.

Solution

Following a competitive tender process, Mountjoy were awarded Phase 6 of the works comprising demolition & strip out, carpentry, dry lining & partitioning, asbestos removal, general finishing trades, services infrastructure and the installation of fixed furniture.

The majority of work was carried out whilst the school was occupied. Due to the specific support needs of the pupils, particular care was given to ensure that all working areas were secure and locked down at all times.

To further support the school, our Site Manager held weekly meetings with the Headteacher to confirm plans for the week ahead and ensure we were doing all that we could to minimise disruption for staff and pupils across the school day.
